What the site stores about you, why, and how to delete it all.

Without signing in, everything stays in your browser

You can read the topics, learn words and build “My dictionary” without an account. Your dictionary, settings and exercise progress are kept only in this browser. The site does not store them.

Signing in does not change that: moving your dictionary and settings between devices is not ready yet, so they are not part of the account for now.

What the site stores when you sign in

You sign in with Google. After that the site keeps four things:

  • your Google account code: Google issues it, and the site uses it to recognise you the next time you sign in;
  • your email address: the account menu shows it, so you can see which account you are signed in with;
  • the time the account was created on the site;
  • records of your sign-ins: when you signed in and until which day the sign-in is valid. They say nothing about your device.

The site takes nothing else from Google: no name, no photo, no contacts. The site never sees your Google password, you only type it on Google's own page.

Why

Signing in lets the site recognise you on any device. Later your dictionary and settings will be linked to the account. When that happens, this page will say what else is stored.

Cookies

While you are signed in, your browser keeps two cookies. The first holds the sign-in key. The second only tells the page that you are signed in and holds nothing secret.

The site does not store the key itself, only a fingerprint of it that the key cannot be recovered from. So even a copy of the site's database does not let anyone into your account.

A sign-in lasts 90 days. It is set back to 90 days when the site checks your sign-in and fewer than 60 days are left. Today the site checks it only when you open the account menu or this page. If you do neither for a long time, you will have to sign in again after 90 days.

How to sign out and delete the account

When you are signed in, the “Sign out” and “Delete account” buttons are right here on this page, at the end of this section. Once the sign-in button appears in the site's header, its menu will have them too. On a phone that menu is at the bottom of the site's main menu.

  • “Sign out” ends the sign-in on this device.
  • “Delete account” at once deletes your account and every sign-in on every device from the site's database. The words and settings in this browser stay.

Visit statistics

To understand what people use and what confuses them, the site collects statistics with two services:

  • Cloudflare Web Analytics counts visits: which pages are opened, where visitors come from and how fast the pages load. It sets no cookies.
  • PostHog records what happens on a page: page views, clicks, click heatmaps and session recordings. A session recording shows what was on the screen and what you scrolled and clicked. It keeps its anonymous visitor number in the browser's storage, not in a cookie. The email address in the account menu is kept out of the recordings.

To switch both services off in this browser, open any page of the site with ?analytics=off added to the end of the address. ?analytics=on switches them back on.
